Harsh Site Plantings With Soils Prone To Drought and Little to No Organic Matter – For Heavy Rainfall Sites with Acidic Soils
The Silva Worm blend, which is a kid brother to the highly successful Chilcotin-worm blend, has also been designed to stimulate root production on harsh sites that have essentially no organic matter present. The sites best suited to the Silva-Worm have acidic soils in heavy rainfall areas and have been severely impacted by very hot forest fires or other severe disturbances. Road rehabilitation on gravelly soils is another common example of where they could be used. These are sites the forester basically has to re-start the ecosystem from scratch.
This is where the Silva–worm blend can help. Not only does it contain 10g of RTI’s growth-enhancing controlled-release fertilizer, but it also contains 10g of worm castings to provide a source of organic matter. The importance of organic matter can not be understated as it is critical to the successful establishment of any plant. This is not only because of the moisture and nutrients it provides but also because it feeds a host of soil organisms that are very beneficial to your plant in supplying moisture and nutrients over the long term. Your seedling can not be successful without them. Also, having the organic matter in the form of worm castings also offers additional benefits. This includes supplying a readily available source of calcium and magnesium, which are in low supply in acidic soils. Calcium is of great benefit as it is critical in establishing roots and acts as a secondary messenger to alert plants to “batten down the hatches” when environmental stresses like drought occur. Worm castings also supply readily available micronutrients that allow the plant to build defense compounds further protecting them from environmental stresses.
